The Step Mission

The mission of the Success Through Education Program is to provide inner city students the opportunity to receive a quality education through scholarships to local private elementary and high schools. These education grants provide students the necessary preparation to successfully meet the intellectual and social demands of college or the workplace.

These students come from challenging urban communities, where the majority of families live below the poverty line in areas which frequently suffer from greater levels of unemployment, higher crime rates and gang activity.

The reality for LA’s inner city school children who are relegated to local high public schools is sobering: these schools have a dropout rate of over 33%, and less than 10% of their graduates go on to college. However, local private high schools have a dropout rate of less than 5%, and 95% go on to college. By securing a quality education, these students are able to rise above these challenges and reach their full potential as members of our community.

Fast Facts:

STEP, now a small, grass-roots organization, started out as just one person, Ron Crimins, who single-handedly started raised funds from friends, family and business acquaintances to help children in South Central Los Angeles attend local private high schools.
Since 2000, STEP has awarded over $1 million in tuition assistance to deserving students.
STEP is currently awarding tuition assistance to 68 students (52 high school, 16 K-8th) at 14 schools.
The professional backgrounds and networks of contacts of STEP board include diverse fields, including entertainment, finance, law, education and social media.

In order to qualify for a scholarship, the student’s only requirements are:

1) Financial need, as determined by the Board of Directors
2) A letter of acceptance from the student’s school of choice.
